A Founder's Field Notes

The continent
isn't emerging.
It's arrived.

I've spent years watching Africa's infrastructure gaps get called "problems." I call them market briefs. This is my map of 124 fundable, scalable venture ideas — organised by sector, written for builders.

The Thesis

Africa doesn't need charity. It needs infrastructure capital — the patient, courageous kind that builds rails before there are trains. Every gap on this list is a gap because global capital hasn't shown up yet, not because the market doesn't exist.

The founders who win the next decade won't be the ones who built for Africa's consumers. They'll be the ones who built the systems those consumers run on — the identity layer, the payment rail, the cold chain, the energy grid. This is that list.

01 Infrastructure First Build the rails, not just the trains. The biggest exits will come from enabling layers.
02 Context Is Alpha A foreign playbook applied to African markets is not a strategy. It's a guess.
03 Informal Is the Market The informal economy isn't a segment to capture — it's the economy to upgrade.
04 Climate Is the Product Africa holds the world's largest climate opportunity. Founders should price accordingly.
Cross-sector Moonshots

Five bets that could redefine everything

African Sovereign Cloud Alliance
A federated, pan-African data sovereignty infrastructure to end digital colonialism in the cloud.
Pan-African Carbon Marketplace
Africa holds 30% of the world's carbon sinks. A unified exchange could unlock trillions for reforestation and conservation.
Decentralised Water & Energy Grids
Community-owned, peer-to-peer utility networks that bypass ageing national infrastructure entirely.
AI for Policy Planning
Governance-as-a-Service: AI-driven simulation tools for African ministries to model policy impact before implementation.
Local Materials Innovation Lab
Deep R&D on bamboo, clay, mycelium, and other African biomaterials as substitutes for imported industrial inputs.
